About the Project
Urban Planning for Makuhari is a large-scale urban development project for the Makuhari Wakaba 3-Chome district. The plan is to create a mixed-use neighborhood, bringing together different functions for working, living, education and leisure, on a 17.5 ha site, one of the largest of its kind in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
As the master architect for the project, we have formulated the relevant design guideline. The work was promoted in partnership with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca (ZGF) Architects, which has been involved in various town development projects in Portland, Oregon, known for repeatedly being named the US’s most livable city. We held workshop sessions to discuss issues related to relationships with the adjacent Makuhari Bay Town, routing from Kaihin-Makuhari Station (the closest train station), and building systems to enable vibrancy created within new facilities to be shared by those outside, among other themes.
The district consists of eight zones, including six surrounding the spacious Wakaba 3-Chome Park as a centerpiece for the overall plan. Each zone has been designed to serve multiple purposes in addition to residential use, seeking to draw a large population with different purposes, thereby reducing the demographic discrepancy between the daytime and nighttime.
Commercial functions are planned to be installed along roads connecting Makuhari Kaihin Park and Wakaba 3-Chome Park, with a view to improving convenience for residents and visitors alike as well as their enjoyment of the location.
In 2019, we celebrated, as the relevant design architect, the completion of Makuhari Bay-Park Cross Tower & Residence, the district’s first construction project. We hope that this milestone achievement will drive the entire project to create an attractive, mixed-use new town in Makuhari.
