Embodies the Three Phases of Water Through Spatial Design
In line with the theme of EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai—”Designing Future Society for Our Lives”—the Belgium Pavilion’s main concept is “Saving Lives.” The pavilion is designed using the structure of cells and water—the source of life—as its motif.
The architectural concept is “water.” The pavilion embodies the three states of water through three architectural forms: solid = an ice box, liquid = a flowing slope that incorporates soft light and encircles the perimeter, and gas = white, expandable clouds. These forms are planned as a spatial experience that illustrates the cycle of life. The “Heart,” a two-story, hexagonal atrium inspired by the molecular structure of water, lies at the center of the building. Wall plantings and cascading water visually connect heaven and earth, nature and humanity. This forms the core of the entire pavilion, symbolizing life. Starting from the “Heart,” exhibition spaces and perimeter slopes lead continuously to a rooftop terrace that offers panoramic views of the Expo venue, creating an experiential path that evokes the cycle of life. The exterior features Belgian Rockpanel and Polycarbonate, and the paving incorporates Belgian stone and brick. This design actively embraces Belgian culture and technology. The building’s enhanced insulation performance considers environmental impact, and its lightweight construction addresses the unique ground conditions typical of reclaimed site. The designs incorporate Belgian design standards, combining the expertise of both countries into a unified performance and structural system.
The Belgian Pavilion aimed to create a space to share the vital role of water in creating and sustaining life, the relationship between humanity and the environment, and the importance and challenges of environmental preservation for future generations. We believe that visiting the pavilion offered a chance to experience Belgian culture and technology, as well as a chance to contemplate the idea of “Saving Lives.”
