In Harmony with the Garden
The area of Tani in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City retains a rich natural environment. Bamboo groves and stone walls once spread across this former samurai district, and even today, the area still has a strong sense of nature’s presence. Nearby stands the highly valuable Yoshimura Family Residence, which features a distinctive spatial composition where nature and architecture interact harmoniously. This is evident in the reception area, which blends seamlessly with the garden.
Considering this local context, the project designers created common areas based on the concept of a home that coexists with the garden, using lush greenery, gardens, and natural materials as themes. The design follows the spatial concept of a seamless integration of interior and exterior that has long been cherished in this area by extending the natural, unglazed tiles used on the exterior into the interior of the entrance. The vestibule features natural materials, such as wood doors with a Naguri finish, which creates a distinctive textured surface on wood. Historically, this area was lined with samurai residences and bamboo fences, known as “chinchiku-bei,” shaped the valley’s landscape. Today, a bamboo grove covers the eastern part of the site, preserving the region’s strong association with bamboo. To honor this local history, the lounge beyond the vestibule features fabric-covered glass inspired by the bamboo grove. Furthermore, thin, round pipes arranged on the walls express the image of the bamboo grove using modern materials.
The landscape area connected to the lounge creates a seamless indoor-outdoor composition, giving the space a sense of depth and expansiveness. This effect is thoroughly achieved by extending the line of the curved glass wall, which separates the lounge from the passageway, outward to the exterior. Despite its proximity to the city center, the landscape design takes advantage of the abundant natural surroundings on the site. Centered on the themes of “a home surrounded and protected by greenery” and “a garden where the changing seasons and landscapes overlap,” the design incorporates thoughtful details to allow residents to experience nature’s charm up close.
