In search of the
"optimal solution" for design

01

Moments I Feel Enjoyment and Growth

When a project I am responsible for is completed, I feel a great sense of accomplishment and fulfillment, as well as personal growth. The level of enjoyment varies depending on the phase of the project, and it is not just fun, but a series of challenges. Although things often do not go as planned, I am happy when I find an answer that is close to the “optimal solution” in the process. There are also times when I realize that it is because I like thinking that I am able to continue doing this work.

At JMA/PC&PJ, we work on projects as a team, so we have many opportunities to hold meetings to share information and discuss designs, which is a unique feature of the company. As a result, compared to before I changed jobs, I have gained the ability to speak at internal and external meetings and presentations, and I feel that I have grown through communicating with others.

Flat Office Environment

The office has members of a wide range of ages, with many senior and junior members close in age, making it easy to consult and talk with each other. Although the office is divided into specialized fields such as architecture, interior design, and landscape design, we often work as a team to move a project forward, creating designs through conversation, which makes the office full of vitality.

Although Mitsui is usually calm, but when it comes to design discussions, he is very rigorous and often gives us essential points of view. I feel that this attitude is the driving force behind the creation of even better products.

03

What is JMA/PC&PJ's design?

JMA/PC&PJ’s design is more of a “design of necessity” incorporating elements of the environment, history, and culture, rather than something with a strong personal color. We determine what is necessary for this place and seek to create a design that has universal value without getting caught up in trends. Therefore, it is not characterized by temporary trends, but by essential beauty and functionality that can adapt to any era.

What experience or skills have I been able to leverage because I joined the company mid-career?

My previous job taught me how to work, how to approach construction, how to think about detailing, and how to communicate with clients and the job site. I still feel that I cannot thank them enough for all they have taught me and there will be no end to writing about it.

My deep understanding of things and my attitude of persistently taking on challenges even in difficult situations have been very useful in my work at JMA/PC&PJ. Although the content of our work differs in some areas, we all share the same goal of creating something, and I feel that I am using my experience to the best of my ability.

SCHEDULE

A typical day for me

  • 9:30

    Getting to work

During the commute, I think about the morning's work. I share the schedule with the team at the morning meeting.
  • Paperwork and meetings

Priority is given to tasks that can be completed in a short period of time (answering emails, internal work, preparing for meetings, etc.).
  • 12:30

    Lunch

Lunch break is usually from 12:30 to 13:30, but the time may be adjusted depending on the day's schedule.
  • Design review + document preparation

In many cases, we can secure a reasonable amount of time to focus on design review and document preparation.
  • End of work

In general, we try to leave the office on time at 18:30, but depending on the workload, we may leave a little later. On the other hand, we have an environment that allows us to work flexibly on a daily basis, including telecommuting and meetings that require us to leave the office.
