Urban Planning for Maya

”Maya City Project” is a community-building project in Nada Ward in Kobe, Hyogo, consisting of seven blocks with eight buildings. We have been working on it for 15 years since our participation in a design competition in 2007.
The project is located on a site that enjoys an environment filled with nature and allows residents to feel the fresh breeze that blows between Osaka Bay to the south and Mt. Rokkō to the north, while being within easy access of Osaka and Sannomiya with five available stations, including JR Maya Station one minute’s walk away.
With a consistent design code, including a skyline that subtly recalls the peaks of Mt. Rokkō and façades that consciously incorporate the sense of speed of a location beside the railway, we have given a unified narrative style to the seven blocks with eight buildings that stretch east-west over about 1 kilometer, using the former location of JR’s Higashi-Nada Switchyard. Moreover, we have individualized the design of each building, as if to recall lifestyles that change over a dozen years, and have created a diverse streetscape.
As all the buildings reach completion and the Maya City Project finishes next year (2022), it will start its life as a town at last. We look forward to seeing how this town, which took so long to complete, will grow up in the future.
